Nimrods is every teen road movie you’ve ever seen, plugged into a Green Day amp. The bones are familiar: three kids, a borrowed car, a bad plan, a big show at the end. Tommy and Fred, two Kansas City superfans, get pranked into believing their garage band, the Analog Dogs, will open Green Day’s New Year’s Eve show in Los Angeles. Their drummer, Chad, smells a rat. They go anyway, in Tommy’s big brother’s car, and Tommy doesn’t even have a license. Then they put diesel in it, win a local music contest only to get disqualified for being in high school, and end up rolling west in an ice cream truck. Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman and Ryan Foust are spot-on as three goofballs who need each other, and the scrappy, DIY energy feels real. The soundtrack mixes the hits with deep cuts. A 6.3 because the kids are great and the road is well worn. $400.88 says you dig out an old band shirt this weekend and wear it like a passport.
What works: The three leads have easy, funny chemistry, and the Green Day soundtrack gives the whole thing a jolt.
What doesn’t: The road comedy beats are extremely familiar, and you can see most of the big turns coming miles away.
Who it’s for: Anyone who ever started a garage band, and Green Day fans who want to hear the deep cuts on a big screen.
Wayne finally admits the gig was a prank, but the boys sneak into the show anyway, and Fred gets pulled onstage to play guitar with Green Day. Afterward the band hears the Analog Dogs’ song "Bored" and offers them a shot at performing and recording.
It's winter break in Kansas City, and best friends Tommy (Mason Thames) and Fred (Kylr Coffman) live for two things: Green Day and their own band, the Analog Dogs, with cautious drummer Chad (Ryan Foust) behind the kit. Then Keith (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio), the best friend of Tommy's big brother Wayne (Keen Ruffalo), tells them the Analog Dogs have been picked to open for Green Day on New Year's Eve in Los Angeles. Chad smells something off. Tommy and Fred do not, so they take Wayne's car without asking, even though Tommy has no license, and hit the road. Lee Kirk writes and directs. One hundred seven minutes, all power chords.
Anyone with a garage band and a dream gig. Double-check your sources.
