Poison garden. Porcelain mask. A plan nobody in the theater could explain on the drive home. Rami Malek’s Safin is the weakest part of No Time to Die, a villain with great interior design and nothing to say. Everything else is Daniel Craig’s victory lap, and at 163 minutes it’s a long lap. The opening in Italy is gorgeous and tense. Ana de Armas shows up in Cuba for one fight, steals the whole movie in an evening gown and then leaves, which feels like a crime. Lashana Lynch’s Nomi is fun whenever the script lets her be. Craig finally gets to play Bond as a person with something to lose, and he’s great at it. It made $906.8 million worldwide on a reported budget north of $250 million, so the goodbye paid for itself. A 7.0 because the farewell lands and the villain doesn’t. $3,202 says you spend the next week arguing with someone about which Craig Bond movie is the best one.
What works: Craig’s most human Bond, the tense Italian opening, and Ana de Armas making a short appearance feel like a whole movie.
What doesn’t: Safin is a forgettable villain with a muddled plan, and 163 minutes is far more than this story needs.
Who it’s for: Craig-era Bond fans who want a real ending to his run and don’t mind it taking its time.
Bond learns Madeleine’s daughter Mathilde is his, then gets infected with a nanobot weapon coded to their DNA, so he can never touch them again. He stays behind on Safin’s island as the missiles hit, and James Bond does not make it out.
James Bond (Daniel Craig) is trying out a quiet life in southern Italy with Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), until an ambush makes him doubt her. Five years later he is retired and fishing in Jamaica when his old CIA friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) asks a favor: track down a kidnapped scientist and a dangerous stolen weapon. MI6 has a new 007, Nomi (Lashana Lynch), who wants Bond out of her way. Meanwhile, a quiet, scarred man named Safin (Rami Malek) has plans of his own. Cary Joji Fukunaga directs. One hundred sixty-three minutes, and Craig makes every one count.
Anyone who has followed Daniel Craig's Bond since Casino Royale. Pack for Jamaica.
