Eighty-nine minutes, one arcade and a dad who can’t let a single thing slide. Nobody 2 is basically the first movie on vacation, and the plot is thin enough to read a menu through. Hutch is still working off what he owes the Barber one dangerous job at a time, so he hauls Becca and the kids to the Wisconsin town with the amusement park from his childhood and promises zero trouble. Then a teen bully, a rude arcade worker and a crooked sheriff show up. Bob Odenkirk is the whole reason it works. He plays Hutch as a tired suburban dad who happens to be the most dangerous man in any room, and he sells the guilt as well as the fights. Sharon Stone plays Lendina, the boss who quietly runs the town, and Christopher Lloyd and RZA are back. A 6.2 because it’s a fun rerun with a lead who keeps it human. $27.66 says you lose a carnival game this year and feel a strange urge to have a word with management.
What works: Bob Odenkirk makes Hutch funny, tired and believable, and the short runtime keeps the whole thing moving.
What doesn’t: The story is a thin copy of the first film’s setup, with villains who barely register beyond the job they do in the plot.
Who it’s for: Fans of the first Nobody who want more of Hutch and don’t mind the same story in a new town.
Hutch teams up with Wyatt, his dad David and his brother Harry to turn the amusement park into a trap for Lendina’s crew, and Becca is the one who takes Lendina down. David blows up the park, and the family ends up looking at a photo album of their wrecked vacation.
Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is still paying off a huge debt by doing dangerous jobs for the Barber (Colin Salmon), and it's eating all his family time. So he plans a getaway with his wife Becca (Connie Nielsen) and kids Brady (Gage Munroe) and Sammy (Paisley Cadorath): a trip to Plummerville, Wisconsin, home of the amusement park he loved as a kid. He promises Becca no trouble. Then a run-in at the arcade puts him on the wrong side of park owner Wyatt (John Ortiz) and Sheriff Abel (Colin Hanks), and this little town has a boss, Lendina (Sharon Stone). Timo Tjahjanto directs. Eighty-nine minutes, one terrible vacation.
Anyone who has ever needed a vacation from their vacation.
