The bad guy in Nobody is a Russian mob boss who sings karaoke in his own nightclub, and that’s about as deep as he goes. Everyone working for him exists to get thrown through something. Doesn’t matter much, because Bob Odenkirk is a wonderfully weird pick for an action hero, and it works. He looks like a guy who irons his khakis, and when the bus fight kicks off he gets hurt, gets winded and keeps going anyway, which makes every hit land twice. That bus scene is the best thing in the movie, messy and mean and kinda hilarious. Christopher Lloyd plays Hutch’s dad, and the movie eventually hands him a shotgun, which is a gift to everyone. At 92 minutes, it’s in and out before your snacks run out. It made $57.5 million worldwide on a reported $16M. A 7.1 because it’s a lean, mean dad fantasy that never pretends to be more. $2,981 says you chase a garbage truck down the street this week, miss it, and take it personally.
What works: Bob Odenkirk sells every fight by actually getting hurt, the bus brawl is a classic, and the whole thing moves fast at 92 minutes.
What doesn’t: The villain is a karaoke-singing cartoon with no real menace, and his henchmen are just bodies waiting to be thrown into things.
Who it’s for: Anyone who liked John Wick but wishes the hero had a minivan, a mortgage and a dad with a shotgun.
Hutch turns out to be a retired auditor, the person government agencies sent when a problem needed to disappear for good. He lures Yulian’s crew to his father-in-law’s factory and wins with help from his dad and his brother, and the family goes house hunting like nothing happened.
Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) lives on repeat: morning jog, coffee, the bus to a dull office job at his father-in-law's company, and the garbage truck he always just misses. When burglars break into the house, Hutch holds back, and his teenage son Brady (Gage Munroe) and wife Becca (Connie Nielsen) quietly decide he's a pushover. But Hutch might be holding back more than a golf club. One tense bus ride later, he has the attention of Yulian Kuznetsov (Aleksei Serebryakov), a Russian crime boss with a short temper and a very big wallet. Ilya Naishuller directs. Ninety-two minutes, one missing kitty-cat bracelet.
Anyone who keeps missing the garbage truck. It's not a sign. Probably.
