How Oblivion Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Somebody fed a stack of old sci-fi paperbacks into a blender, and Tom Cruise climbed out in a very clean jumpsuit. Oblivion borrows from so many classics you could play bingo with it, and the big reveals show up long after you’ve already figured them out. That’s the problem. The good news is it looks incredible. Joseph Kosinski shoots a ruined Earth like a luxury car ad: a spotless white tower above the clouds, a bubble-shaped ship, drones that hum like angry vacuum cleaners. Andrea Riseborough is the best thing in it, a woman holding her whole life together with a polite smile and a glass desk. Morgan Freeman shows up late to explain things in his very Morgan Freeman voice. It made $286.2 million worldwide on a reported $120M budget, so somebody liked the jumpsuit too. A 6.3 because the design is gorgeous and the story is a remix you’ve already heard. $706 says you spend half the movie naming the other sci-fi movies it reminds you of, out loud.

What works: The gorgeous design of the sky tower and bubble ship, and Andrea Riseborough’s tightly wound performance.

What doesn’t: Almost every twist is borrowed from older sci-fi, so the big reveals arrive long after you’ve guessed them.

Who it’s for: People who watch sci-fi for the look, and anyone who wants to see Tom Cruise fly a very cool little ship.

Spoilers

Jack is one of many clones of the real astronaut Jack Harper, the scavengers he’s been fighting are human survivors, and the real invader is the Tet. Jack flies a bomb into the Tet to end it, and later another Jack clone finds Julia and her young daughter.

Oblivion's Blurbs
About me:

It's 2077, decades after a war with alien invaders left the Moon in pieces and Earth mostly empty. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is one of the last people still on the surface, repairing the drones that guard huge machines pulling energy out of the oceans. He and his partner Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) live in a glass tower above the clouds, two weeks away from joining everyone else in space. Jack keeps dreaming about a woman he has never met. Then a spacecraft crashes nearby, and Julia (Olga Kurylenko), the woman in his dreams, is on board. Joseph Kosinski directs. One hundred twenty-four minutes, and Jack has a lot of questions.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone with a secret hideout full of vinyl and old paperbacks. Jack wants to trade.
