Ocean's 8 (2018)

Nothing goes wrong in Ocean’s 8, and that’s the problem. A heist movie needs at least one moment where the plan wobbles and the crew has to improvise, and Gary Ross keeps it so smooth you could balance a champagne glass on it. The cast is absurdly stacked, which makes it stranger that most of them get one trait each. Rihanna types, Awkwafina pickpockets, Mindy Kaling looks at jewelry. Sandra Bullock is calm and cool as Debbie, and Cate Blanchett’s Lou gets the best outfits in the history of crime. The one actually having fun is Anne Hathaway. Her Daphne is a vain, needy movie star who might be sharper than anyone gives her credit for, and she turns every scene into a comedy. Helena Bonham Carter’s frazzled designer is a close second. The Met Gala scenes look gorgeous. It made $297.8 million worldwide on a reported $70M. A 5.3 because it’s a stylish hangout with nothing at stake. $670.33 says you check the clasp on your watch twice at the next fancy dinner you go to.

What works: Anne Hathaway is a riot as Daphne, and the Met Gala setting looks spectacular.

What doesn’t: The plan never hits a real snag, so there’s no tension, and a stacked cast gets one trait per person.

Who it’s for: People who watch heist movies for the outfits, the banter and the satisfying click of a plan coming together.
