There’s never one second where you think Danny Ocean might lose, which should drain all the tension out of a heist movie and instead is the whole fun. Steven Soderbergh isn’t selling suspense. He’s selling cool. George Clooney grins through every scene like he already read the ending. Brad Pitt’s Rusty is eating in basically every shot, the best running joke the movie never mentions. Matt Damon’s Linus is the nervous rookie and the secret weapon. Andy García plays Terry Benedict like a man who irons his own soul. The planning scenes are the best part, which tells you something. The weakness: Tess is written like a prize instead of a person, Julia Roberts deserved more, and the crew is so big half of them get one joke each. It made $450.9 million worldwide. An 8.4 because it’s the most rewatchable heist movie around and nothing about it tries too hard. $93 says you buy a suit you don’t need within a week.
What works: The planning scenes, Pitt snacking his way through the movie, and a cast so relaxed it feels like hanging out.
What doesn’t: There’s zero real danger, and Tess is written as a prize to be won back instead of a character.
Who it’s for: People who rewatch heist movies for the planning montage, and anyone who likes a good suit.
The SWAT team that storms the vault is Danny’s crew, and the vault footage Benedict watches was filmed on a replica set. Benedict picks the money over Tess, so she leaves him, and when Danny gets out of jail, Rusty and Tess are waiting to pick him up.
Danny Ocean (George Clooney) walks out of a New Jersey prison and goes straight back to work. The target: three Las Vegas casinos owned by the smooth, ruthless Terry Benedict (Andy García), all feeding one underground vault on the night of a huge boxing match. Danny recruits his best friend Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt), cranky money man Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould) and young pickpocket Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon), then fills out an eleven-person crew of specialists. Steven Soderbergh directs it like a cool jazz record. One hundred sixteen minutes, not one wrinkled suit.
Anyone who can count cards and keep a secret. Bring a nice suit.
