No danger, no sweat, great suits. Ocean’s Thirteen is a heist movie with nothing to prove, and it plays like it. The crew isn’t broke or in trouble. They’re getting even for a friend, so the stakes stay about as high as a casino carpet. The plan involves a giant drilling machine, rigged dice, a fake earthquake and a hotel reviewer having the worst stay of his life, and somewhere around the fourth moving part you stop tracking and just admire the tailoring. Al Pacino plays the casino boss as a smug show-off and seems happy to be there. The best scene is just George Clooney and Brad Pitt watching a daytime talk show and both getting misty. Casey Affleck’s side trip to a factory in Mexico, where he ends up leading a workers’ strike, is the funniest detour. Andy García sulks perfectly. It made $311.3 million worldwide on a reported $85M. A 6.4 because it’s a stylish hangout with a heist attached. $1,701 says you catch a daytime talk show this week, get misty, and blame allergies.
What works: The cast is relaxed and funny together, and Soderbergh keeps the look and the music cooler than the plot needs.
What doesn’t: The stakes are low, the plan is too tangled to follow, and nobody on the crew ever feels in real trouble.
Who it’s for: Fans of the first Ocean’s who just want to hang out with the crew one more time in Vegas.
The fake earthquake hits on opening night, every rigged game pays out at once, the crew walks off with Bank’s diamonds, and the hotel loses its shot at the Five Diamond Award. Reuben recovers, and Benedict, who paid for part of the job, finds his cut donated to charity in his name.
Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould) trusted the wrong partner. Casino boss Willy Bank (Al Pacino) muscles him out of their brand-new Las Vegas hotel, and the shock leaves Reuben sick in bed. Danny Ocean (George Clooney) gives Bank one chance to make it right. Bank says no. So Danny, Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt), Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon) and the rest of the crew plan payback for opening night: rig every game so the house loses, and make sure the place never lands the Five Diamond Award that every Bank hotel brags about. Steven Soderbergh directs. One hundred twenty-two minutes, and this time the house loses.
Anyone with a grudge and a twelve-person group chat. Dress for the casino.
