Oh, Hi! nails its first night and then spends the rest of the weekend making choices no actual person would make. Molly Gordon plays Iris, four months into dating Isaac (Logan Lerman) and off on their first getaway, a farmhouse rental in upstate New York. That first evening, Isaac admits he doesn’t want anything serious, and Iris, who thought they were exclusive, refuses to let him go home until he comes around. Gordon is fantastic, fearless and funny even when Iris is completely in the wrong. Things wobble once her best friend Max and Max’s boyfriend Kenny arrive as backup, and a plan involving a witch cousin and a memory potion shows up. That’s where the farce takes over and the feelings drain out. Critics split at 64%, and audiences were colder. A 5.3 because the premise is sharp and the follow-through gets goofy. $39.19 says you ask the next person you date what this is before the appetizers arrive.
What works: Molly Gordon gives a fearless comic performance, and the opening setup is a smart twist on the weekend-getaway rom-com.
What doesn’t: Once the friends and the potion show up, the characters’ choices stop making sense and the farce flattens the feelings.
Who it’s for: Grown-ups who like their rom-coms dark, awkward and willing to make them squirm a little.
Isaac overheard the whole memory plan, so he fakes a pancake run, takes Iris’s car and drives off in the rain. He wrecks it and ends up hurt in the woods, where Iris finds him, and they finally have an honest talk and apologize before an ambulance takes him away.
Iris (Molly Gordon) and Isaac (Logan Lerman) have been dating for four months, and their first weekend away together, at a farmhouse rental in High Falls, New York, is supposed to be perfect. Then, on night one, Isaac casually mentions that he is not looking for anything serious. Iris thought they were exclusive. She does not take it well. In fact, she decides Isaac is not leaving that farmhouse until he changes his mind, and she calls her best friend Max (Geraldine Viswanathan) and Max's boyfriend Kenny (John Reynolds) for backup. Sophie Brooks directs. Ninety-five minutes, one very bad weekend.
Anyone who asks 'what are we' before the trip. Save everybody a weekend.
