A demon that looks just like Jessica Chastain asks a seven-year-old for permission to move into her heart, and the movie treats it like a very spooky permission slip. The first scare is a good one: a mom who isn’t quite mom, standing at the stove, smiling wrong. Then Other Mommy keeps changing shape, getting bigger and goofier, and by the time a team of ghost hunters rolls in with their gear, the dread has turned into giggles. Chastain goes all in on both roles and deserves a sharper script. Karen Allen shows up as a grandma who has fought ghosts before, which sounds like a better movie than this one. The more the film explains its demon, the less scary it gets. Audiences gave it a D+ CinemaScore, and it still pulled $36.5 million domestic, so horror fans showed up and left grumbling. A 2.8 because one strong early idea gets buried under 93 minutes of monster rules. $698 says you hear a pot boiling tonight and check who’s standing at the stove.
What works: The early kitchen scare, with a mom who is almost but not quite right, and Jessica Chastain’s fully committed double role.
What doesn’t: The monster gets bigger and sillier as the movie goes, so every new scare lands softer than the one before it.
Who it’s for: Horror fans who want a cheap jump or two on a weeknight and won’t mind laughing at the wrong moments.
Ursula admits she never wanted to be a mom at first, which weakens the demon but crushes Bella, who nearly lets it in. Bella remembers her grandmother saying pain is part of life, keeps refusing the demon permission and beats it, and months later the family is happy, though Bella spots signs that her mom’s sadness is creeping back.
Seven-year-old Bella (Arabella Olivia Clark) is new at school, her parents are drifting apart, and something that looks exactly like her mom keeps asking to be let into her heart. Her real mom (Jessica Chastain) is never home. Her dad (Jay Duplass) is starting to notice. Rob Savage directs, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster made it, and it is based on a Josh Malerman novel. Ninety-three minutes of not trusting your own mother.
Anyone whose kid has an imaginary friend. Check twice.
