Every word in Out of Darkness is spoken in Tola, a language invented for the movie, and somehow that’s the easy part to follow. Some 45,000 years ago, a band of six crosses to a strange, cold coast: Adem, his partner Ave, his younger brother Geirr, his son Heron, Beyah and Odal. They set off for the mountains to find a cave. Then Heron is taken in the night, and Adem leads everyone into the forest after whatever took him. Andrew Cumming makes a striking, grim debut, and Adam Janota Bzowski’s score, almost all drums, keeps you on edge. The catch: it’s sold as horror but plays more like a sad parable about where human conflict comes from, and the late turn toward sympathy sits uneasily with how brutal the middle gets. Critics gave it 86% on Rotten Tomatoes; audiences dragged its movie.guru score down to 4.3. A 6.2 because it’s tense and thoughtful even when its tones collide. $1,241 says you try ordering dinner in Tola tonight and your family plays along for about a minute.
What works: The percussive score and the striking, rugged visuals make the danger feel close, and the invented language makes the world feel truly ancient.
What doesn’t: It’s marketed as a horror movie but plays more like a grim parable, and the late swing toward sympathy clashes with everything before it.
Who it’s for: Patient horror fans who prefer dread and big ideas over jump scares, and anyone curious what a survival thriller sounds like in an invented language.
The thing stalking them turns out to be a pair of Neanderthals, and by the end Beyah finds Heron unharmed in their cave. Heron insists they were like us, and Beyah, finally seeing it, claims the cave for the two of them and says they’ll try again.
Forty-five thousand years ago, six people land on a cold, unfamiliar shore looking for a better life. Adem (Chuku Modu) leads the group, with his pregnant partner Ave (Iola Evans), his younger brother Geirr (Kit Young) and his son Heron (Luna Mwezi). Also along: a young woman, Beyah (Safia Oakley-Green), and an older man, Odal (Arno Luening). They head for the mountains to find a cave to call home. Then something out in the dark starts following them. Andrew Cumming directs, and every line is spoken in an invented language called Tola. Eighty-seven minutes, no flashlights.
Anyone who can start a fire fast. Do not wander off at night.
