Imagine two parking garages fighting inside a car wash at midnight. That’s a lot of Pacific Rim, because Guillermo del Toro spent a reported $190M on giant robots versus giant sea monsters and then staged most of the brawls at night, in the rain, where you can’t quite see them. Charlie Hunnam plays the lead like a sturdy pair of work boots: reliable, and not saying much. Then the fun kicks in. A robot swings a cargo ship like a baseball bat. Idris Elba gives a speech about canceling the apocalypse with the energy of a man who has never lost a staring contest. Rinko Kikuchi’s flashback, one little girl alone on a wrecked street, is the best scene in the movie. Charlie Day and Burn Gorman bicker like a sitcom that wandered onto the wrong set. It made $411 million worldwide. A 6.6 because the toys are amazing and the people steering them are cardboard. $3,671 says you go for a high five this week and act like it needs two pilots.
What works: Huge, heavy robot-versus-monster fights, Idris Elba’s commanding Pentecost, and Rinko Kikuchi’s haunting flashback.
What doesn’t: Charlie Hunnam’s lead is a blank, and the night-and-rain fights are often too murky to follow.
Who it’s for: Anyone who grew up smashing toys together and still wants to see it done at skyscraper scale.
Pentecost and Chuck Hansen sacrifice themselves with a nuclear bomb to clear the way, and Raleigh takes Gipsy Danger through the breach by riding along with a dead kaiju. He sends Mako to safety in an escape pod, overloads the reactor to seal the breach, and both pilots surface alive in the ocean.
Giant monsters called Kaiju keep climbing out of a crack in the Pacific floor, so humanity builds Jaegers: skyscraper-sized robots run by two pilots who share one mind through a link called the Drift. Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) was a star pilot until a brutal fight off Alaska made him walk away. Years later, Marshal Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) pulls him back to Hong Kong, sizes him up next to eager young officer Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), and leaves two bickering scientists (Charlie Day, Burn Gorman) to figure out the monsters. Guillermo del Toro directs like a kid with the best toy box ever. One hundred thirty-two minutes, zero chill.
Anyone who can drift without chasing the rabbit. Bring a co-pilot.
