Pegasus 3 made $656.5 million worldwide, and its whole plot could fit on a race bib: the racers are back, there’s a bigger race, and somebody is scheming. Han Han writes and directs the third chapter of his rally series, and Shen Teng returns as Zhang Chi, who can’t shake the itch after the last Bayanbulak rally. This time Bai Qiang, the boss of the Chinese team, asks him and his old partner Sun Yuqiang to build a national squad for the Muchen 100 Rally, which pulls in teams from all over Asia. Top driver Lin Zhendong signs on. Then the easy road hides a plot, and the crew fights to keep the sport clean. Sincere, and exactly what a third chapter would say. If you loved the first two, you’re in. If you’re new, 126 minutes is a long time to spend on rally politics. A 5.4 because it’s big, earnest and very familiar. $6,343 says you start calling your car’s dashboard the cockpit this week, and nobody in the passenger seat lets it slide.
What works: The returning crew and the bigger, pan-Asian rally give longtime fans exactly the reunion they came for.
What doesn’t: The story is a familiar sequel template, and newcomers get very little reason to care about rally politics for over two hours.
Who it’s for: Fans of the first two Pegasus films who want another round with Zhang Chi and his crew.
The national team’s smooth ride turns out to be cover for a scheme behind the scenes. Zhang Chi and his friends choose the harder path, putting the honesty of the sport and their own dignity ahead of the easy way through.
The last Bayanbulak rally is done, and Zhang Chi (Shen Teng) and the crew are back to regular life, but the itch to race never left. Enter Bai Qiang (Sha Yi), boss of the Chinese team, with a pitch for Zhang Chi and his buddy Sun Yuqiang (Yin Zheng): build a national squad for the Muchen 100 Rally, a race packed with teams from across Asia. Hotshot Lin Zhendong (Huang Jingyu) and other top drivers sign on, and the road looks smooth. It is not. Somebody is scheming behind the scenes. Han Han writes and directs part three. One hundred twenty-five minutes, foot all the way down.
Anyone who still gets goosebumps at a starting flag. Helmets required.
