Remember phone booths? Colin Farrell spends 81 minutes trapped in one on a busy Manhattan corner, and the gimmick is so tight it squeaks. Farrell’s Stu is a smooth-talking publicist with an expensive suit and a phone glued to his ear, and watching that swagger melt in real time is the fun. Kiefer Sutherland is mostly just a voice, and that voice is perfect: calm, smug, like your conscience got a promotion. Forest Whitaker brings real decency as the captain trying to work out why this guy won’t hang up. The problem is the caller’s lectures. Stu’s crimes are mostly being a sleazy flirt and a liar, and the movie treats him like a defendant with a rifle for a judge. The ending also wobbles. It made $97.8 million worldwide on a reported $13M. A 6.9 because the pressure never lets up, even when the caller starts preaching. $4,332 says you pass an old phone booth on a trip someday and won’t step inside, even for a photo.
What works: Colin Farrell sweats through every scene, and Kiefer Sutherland’s voice does more damage than most villains manage with a whole body.
What doesn’t: The caller’s moral lectures get preachy, and the final stretch lands on a shrug instead of a punch.
Who it’s for: People who love a single-location thriller and can sit through a lecture if it comes with a ticking clock.
Stu confesses his lies to his wife in front of the crowd, and the police storm a nearby building and find a pizza delivery man dead beside a rifle, so they think the case is closed. As Stu is wheeled away, the real caller strolls past him, says he hopes the confession sticks, and disappears into the city.
Stu Shepard (Colin Farrell) is a fast-talking New York publicist who lives on his cell and fibs for a living. Every day he ducks into a phone booth near Times Square to call a client, Pam (Katie Holmes), so his wife Kelly (Radha Mitchell) never finds out. Today the booth rings back. A calm voice (Kiefer Sutherland) knows everything about Stu, and says a rifle is pointed right at him. Hang up and it's over. Soon Captain Ramey (Forest Whitaker) and half the NYPD are outside, and none of them know about the caller. Joel Schumacher directs. Eighty-one minutes, and nobody gets to hang up.
Anyone who still knows how to use a pay phone. Please don't answer it.
