Five movies in, Jack Sparrow has gone from sly trickster to a wobbly mascot who mostly falls over and waits to be rescued. Johnny Depp still commits, but the bit is beyond tired, and Dead Men Tell No Tales reheats nearly everything from earlier voyages. The only new idea is Javier Bardem’s hair, which floats like he’s underwater even when he’s standing on a deck. The young leads, a cursed sailor’s son and a stargazing scientist, are nice and instantly forgettable. Bardem does what he can with all those grudges, and the ghost sharks are a fun touch. The opening, where a crew drags an entire bank through a seaside town, is the one sequence with real snap. Geoffrey Rush, as always, acts like the movie deserves him. Critics gave it a 30%, and it still made $795.9 million worldwide. A 3.9 because the ship sails on autopilot. $2,677 says you walk past a bank this week and picture the whole building rolling down the street behind a team of horses.
What works: The bank heist opening is genuinely fun, and Geoffrey Rush gives Barbossa a surprising last bit of feeling.
What doesn’t: Jack Sparrow has become a one-joke mascot, and the new young heroes have no spark to carry the story.
Who it’s for: Die-hard Pirates fans who want one more voyage and kids who think ghost sharks are the coolest thing ever.
Henry and Carina find the Trident, and breaking it ends every curse at sea, which turns Salazar’s crew human again and frees Will Turner. Barbossa reveals he’s Carina’s father and sacrifices himself to save her, and Will finally comes home to Elizabeth.
Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) has spent his life trying to break the curse that keeps his father Will on the Flying Dutchman, and the only fix he can find is a legend: the Trident of Poseidon. He needs a pirate to find it. Sadly, the pirate he gets is Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), who is broke, unlucky and about to trade his magic compass for a drink. That trade sets loose Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), a ghostly pirate hunter with an old grudge against Jack. Add a sharp young astronomer, Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario). Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg direct. One hundred twenty-nine minutes, mind the ghost sharks.
Anyone with a working compass. Jack would like his back.
