The Owens curse dooms any guy who falls for an Owens woman, and the sequel curse apparently goes after any script that waits 28 years. Practical Magic 2 has the house, the aunts and the midnight margaritas, then ships everybody off to England to chase a spell book through a plot that feels assembled from a kit. 130 minutes is a lot of potion. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman still play off each other like real sisters, the kind who finish each other’s complaints, and that’s the reason to watch. Joey King’s storyline mostly involves running toward danger so the grown-ups can come save her. The big villain reveal is about as hidden as a broom in a hallway. It made $104.7 million worldwide on a reported $75M budget, and a B+ CinemaScore says the fans had a decent night anyway. A 4.0 because the sisters are still magic and the movie around them is paperwork. $49.46 says you make a midnight snack this week and call it a family ritual.
What works: Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s easy sisterly chemistry, and the cozy return to the Owens house and the aunts.
What doesn’t: The plot runs on coincidences and a villain you can spot early, and the trip to England drags the whole thing out.
Who it’s for: Fans of the 1998 original who mostly want to hang out with the Owens sisters again.
The friendly local helping Kylie in England turns out to be the villain, a descendant of the town’s old lord who wants her magic, and the three Owens women stop him together. The spell book reveals the curse ends only if a witch gives up her life willingly, and Aunt Franny chooses to. A year later Kylie and Gideon get married, Sally kisses Ian, and the Owens women fly off the roof on umbrellas.
Twenty-eight years later, Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman) Owens thought they broke the family curse that kills any man who loves an Owens woman. They were wrong. The aunts (Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest) are back, the next generation (Joey King, Maisie Williams) is in it now, and Susanne Bier directs. One hundred and thirty minutes of midnight margaritas.
Anyone who has watched the first one every October since 1998.
