Pressure is a D-Day movie where the biggest fight happens over a weather map, and it’s more gripping than most battle scenes. That’s also where it cheats a little. To turn the forecast into a duel, it squeezes a messy team effort down to two men, Andrew Scott’s careful Scottish meteorologist James Stagg and Chris Messina’s loud American Irving Krick, and it leaves some of the real forecasters out entirely. As drama, though, it’s terrific. Scott plays Stagg like a man holding his breath for days, quietly refusing to tell the generals what they want to hear while he waits for news of his pregnant wife after the hospital she’s in is bombed. Brendan Fraser gives Eisenhower real weight, especially when he privately drafts two statements, one for success and one for failure. Critics gave it 89% on Rotten Tomatoes. An 8.0 because it turns a forecast into a thriller and treats the stakes with respect. $172 says you let the closing titles play out in silence, then glance at the sky outside with a little extra respect.
What works: Andrew Scott’s simmering performance makes a weather forecast feel life or death, and Brendan Fraser brings real gravity to Eisenhower.
What doesn’t: It simplifies the real history for drama, shrinking a group of forecasting teams into a two-man rivalry and leaving key meteorologists out.
Who it’s for: History fans and anyone who likes a tense, talky drama where the stakes are huge and nobody fires a shot on screen.
Stagg’s storms arrive just as he predicted and Eisenhower postpones the invasion, then a break in the weather lets him launch it on June 6. The landings succeed, and Stagg finds his wife and newborn son safe.
June 1944. The Allied invasion of Normandy, Operation Overlord, is set for June 5, and Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower (Brendan Fraser) needs to know one thing: what the weather will do. He brings Scottish meteorologist Group Captain James Stagg (Andrew Scott) to Southwick House with roughly sixty-one hours on the clock. Stagg's team sees storms heading for the English Channel. American forecaster Col. Irving P. Krick (Chris Messina) sees calm skies. Gen. Bernard Montgomery (Damian Lewis) sees no reason to wait. Anthony Maras directs, from David Haig's stage play. One hundred minutes, the weather report that mattered most.
History teachers, weather nerds, and anyone who checks the forecast twice. Here it really mattered.
