A pig strolls through the Bennet house in this Pride & Prejudice, and nobody bats an eye, which tells you how muddy Joe Wright wanted it. Purists will flinch at what’s missing. Whole subplots get squeezed, Wickham barely registers, and the score swells so often you’ll start bracing for it. Then you notice how alive it all feels. Keira Knightley plays Elizabeth as quick, proud and a little too sure of herself, laughing through scenes other versions play stiff. Matthew Macfadyen’s Darcy is less ice sculpture and more painfully shy guy who keeps saying the wrong thing. Watch his hand right after he helps her into a carriage. Donald Sutherland gets a quiet talk with his daughter that’ll flatten you. The first proposal, in pouring rain, plays like an argument wearing a confession’s clothes. It made $131.9 million worldwide on a reported $28 million. An 8.1 because it trades polish for warmth and wins. $4,343 says you flex your hand dramatically the next time someone helps you out of a car.
What works: Knightley and Macfadyen give the sparring real heat, and the whole film feels lived in, from the muddy hems to the crowded dances.
What doesn’t: Squeezing the novel into one movie flattens several subplots, and the swooning score gets laid on thick.
Who it’s for: Anyone who has ever misjudged someone at a party and spent months pretending they hadn’t.
After Darcy quietly saves the family from Lydia’s scandal, he proposes again in a misty field at dawn, and this time Elizabeth says yes. Mr. Bennet, once he’s convinced she truly loves him, gives his blessing through happy tears.
Late 1700s, rural England. Mrs. Bennet (Brenda Blethyn) has five daughters, no sons and one mission: get them married before the family home passes to a cousin. When rich bachelor Mr. Bingley (Simon Woods) moves into the big house nearby, eldest daughter Jane (Rosamund Pike) catches his eye fast. Her sharp-tongued sister Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) only catches an insult from his friend Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), who is very rich and very rude about it. Mr. Bennet (Donald Sutherland) mostly hides in his study. Joe Wright directs. One hundred twenty-seven minutes of glaring across ballrooms.
Anyone willing to admit they were wrong about someone. Muddy hems welcome.
