Critics never got an early look at Psycho Killer, and after 91 minutes that feels less like a strategy and more like mercy. Andrew Kevin Walker’s script has been kicking around Hollywood since at least 2007, and it shows: the whole thing feels dated. The villain is a pile of borrowed parts, occult symbols, a cross-country trail and a grand scheme that turns out to be pretty silly. Georgina Campbell deserves so much better. Her Jane Archer is a Kansas Highway Patrol officer who loses her husband to this man and chases him across the Midwest, and she plays it smart, steady and restrained. Logan Miller brings real warmth as Marvin, a goth assistant at a strange mansion. Malcolm McDowell drifts in and out without leaving a mark. The stark red look is the only other plus. Critics gave it 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 2.5 because Campbell tries hard and the movie gives her nothing to hold. $588.79 says the next time you pass a highway patrol car, you silently wish Jane Archer a movie that deserves her.
What works: Georgina Campbell gives Jane a smart, steady performance, and Logan Miller adds some welcome warmth in a small role.
What doesn’t: The killer is a generic mash-up of better movie villains, the plotting is dull, and the big final scheme is laughable.
Who it’s for: Georgina Campbell completists and grown-up horror fans who will watch any serial killer chase at least once.
The killer turns out to be Richard Joshua Reeves, a cult preacher everyone believed had died in prison, and his endgame is to blow up a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. Jane catches up to him in the control room and stops him in time, and he is sent back to prison in California, where his spree began.
Kansas Highway Patrol officer Jane Archer (Georgina Campbell) watches her husband Mike die at the hands of a serial killer, one the newspapers have already given a lurid nickname. The killer (James Preston Rogers) leaves occult symbols behind, and his trail started on the West Coast before cutting across the Midwest. Jane makes it her mission to find him and bring him to justice, one small town at a time. Gavin Polone directs, from a script by Andrew Kevin Walker. Ninety-one minutes, no rest stops.
Anyone driving across Kansas alone at night. Lock the doors.
