Regretting You keeps cutting from a family falling apart to a teenage boy secretly scooting a city limits sign until his grandpa’s house falls inside a pizza delivery zone, and the sign is the only thing with a clear motive. Allison Williams plays Morgan, who had Clara young and built a careful life around her. Then a car accident takes her husband Chris and her sister Jenny, and the two of them turn out to have been hiding something. Morgan and Clara grieve in opposite directions, mostly by yelling, while Dave Franco’s Jonah hangs around with old feelings for Morgan. The teen romance between Clara and Miller, played by Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames, is the part that works. The grown-up scenes feel built for a trailer, not for real people. Critics landed at 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, though it made $90.5 million worldwide on a reported $25M budget. A 3.1 because the grief is real and the writing isn’t. $837 says you call your favorite pizza place this week to ask exactly where their delivery zone ends.
What works: Clara and Miller’s slow-motion sign scheme is genuinely charming, and the teen romance has a light touch the rest lacks.
What doesn’t: The adult drama plays like a string of shouting matches and smashed objects, and the dialogue rarely sounds like real people.
Who it’s for: Colleen Hoover readers who want the book brought to life and can forgive a clumsy cry.
Clara blames herself for the accident until Morgan tells her the truth about Chris and Jenny, and mother and daughter finally make peace. Morgan and Jonah end up together, Miller asks Clara to prom, and after the credits roll, the sign finally clears Grandpa’s house and a pizza gets ordered.
Back in high school, Morgan (Allison Williams) became a mom with her boyfriend Chris (Scott Eastwood), while his best friend Jonah (Dave Franco), who was dating Morgan's little sister Jenny (Willa Fitzgerald), quietly carried a torch for Morgan. Seventeen years later, Morgan and Chris are married and raising their daughter Clara (Mckenna Grace), and Jenny and Jonah have a baby boy. On Morgan's birthday, Clara meets classmate Miller Adams (Mason Thames) while he's sneakily moving a city limits sign so his favorite pizza place will deliver to his grandpa's. Turns out they both want to make movies. Josh Boone directs, from Colleen Hoover's novel. One hundred sixteen minutes, bring tissues.
Moms and daughters who need to talk. Maybe after the credits.
