Audiences gave Remember the Titans an A+ CinemaScore while Metacritic critics landed at 48, and both camps have a point. The movie runs on a simple promise: win enough games and a town lets go of its prejudice. Real life is rarely that tidy, and the racism here, from angry parents to a brick through a window, mostly fades as the wins pile up. The speeches are huge, and the soundtrack tells you how to feel. But the core lands. Denzel Washington plays Coach Boone as hard as a steel bleacher, a man who can’t afford a single slip. Will Patton quietly surprises as Yoast, swallowing his pride for his players. The Gettysburg camp, where players must room across racial lines, is the heart, and Wood Harris and Ryan Hurst turn a standoff between Julius and Gerry into a real friendship. It made $136.8 million worldwide. A 7.1 because the friendship is real even when history gets simplified. $7,983 says Ain’t No Mountain High Enough gets stuck in your head and you sing the bus version on purpose.
What works: Denzel Washington and Will Patton make the two coaches feel like real men under real pressure, and the friendship between Julius and Gerry carries genuine weight.
What doesn’t: The film shrinks a town’s deep racism into a few loud villains who fade once the team wins, and the speeches lean on the soundtrack hard.
Who it’s for: Families and sports fans who want an inspiring team movie that takes on a hard chapter of history with a big heart.
The Titans go undefeated, but Gerry is badly hurt in a car accident before the state championship and loses the use of his legs. The team wins the title, and an epilogue years later shows his old teammates gathering to say goodbye to Gerry after his death in a later accident.
Alexandria, Virginia, 1971. The city's high schools are merged, and the school board names Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), a Black coach from North Carolina, head football coach at T. C. Williams High. That pushes aside Bill Yoast (Will Patton), the white coach who was just nominated for the state Hall of Fame. Yoast agrees to stay on as Boone's assistant, mostly for his players' sake. Then Boone takes the whole team to training camp at Gettysburg College and makes Black and white players room together. It is rough going, especially for Gerry Bertier (Ryan Hurst) and Julius Campbell (Wood Harris). Boaz Yakin directs. One hundred thirteen minutes, left side strong.
Teammates, coaches and anyone who knows a locker room can change a town.
