The heart of Reminders of Him is a mother trying to meet her five-year-old for the first time, and the movie keeps stalling it with a romance. Kenna comes home from prison after a car accident that took the life of her boyfriend, Scotty, and his parents, who are raising her daughter Diem, want her nowhere near the girl. That’s a strong, painful setup. The film handles it with such careful restraint that the big emotions rarely break through, and the love story with Ledger, Scotty’s best friend who now runs a bar in their old favorite bookstore, feels like it belongs in a softer movie. Maika Monroe is quietly moving as Kenna, bagging groceries and keeping a diary about the night everything went wrong. Lauren Graham and Bradley Whitford give the grieving grandparents real depth. It made $89.3 million worldwide on a reported $25M. A 4.6 because the performances are sincere and the story plays it too safe. $62.74 says you walk into the next used bookstore you pass and stay an hour longer than you planned.
What works: The cast plays grief and guilt with real sensitivity, and the film never treats Kenna’s pain as a cheap plot device.
What doesn’t: The romance with Ledger crowds out the mother and daughter story, and the restrained tone keeps the big emotions from landing.
Who it’s for: Colleen Hoover readers and anyone who wants a quiet, tearful drama about second chances.
Ledger gives Kenna’s diary to Grace and Patrick, and reading her account of the night Scotty died changes Grace’s mind. Kenna meets Diem, tells her she is her mother, and the family shares dinner, and later Kenna and Diem put Scotty’s roadside memorial back up.
Kenna Rowan (Maika Monroe) spent years in prison for a car accident that took the life of her boyfriend, Scotty (Rudy Pankow). Now she is out on parole and back in her hometown with one goal: meeting Diem (Zoe Kosovic), the five-year-old daughter she has never met, who is being raised by Scotty's parents, Grace (Lauren Graham) and Patrick (Bradley Whitford). They want her nowhere near Diem. Then there is Ledger Ward (Tyriq Withers), Scotty's best friend and a former NFL player, who runs the spot that used to be her favorite bookstore. Vanessa Caswill directs, adapting Colleen Hoover's novel. One hundred fourteen minutes, keep tissues close.
Anyone who believes people deserve a second chance.
