Pyramid Head looms in the fog of Return to Silent Hill like a guest who knows he’s the only reason anybody showed up. Christophe Gans adapts the famous second game, and he clearly loves it, but the movie plods from one gloomy location to the next like a player who lost the map. Jeremy Irvine plays James Sunderland, a painter in rough shape who gets a letter from Mary, the woman he lost, asking him to come back. The town is all ash, fog and empty streets, and some of those images are striking. Then the creatures arrive, and too many look tacky, like props from a seasonal scare maze. The old apartment building and Brookhaven Hospital should be terrifying, and instead they’re just dim. The grief and guilt that made the game hit so hard barely register. It made $48 million worldwide on a reported $23M. A 3.1 because the fog is gorgeous and nothing inside it lands. $497 says you check your mailbox tomorrow and feel genuinely grateful when it’s only coupons.
What works: The ash-covered streets and thick fog look striking, and Gans treats the source with obvious affection.
What doesn’t: It plods, too many creatures look tacky, and the grief at the center of the story never lands with any weight.
Who it’s for: Silent Hill 2 diehards who need to see Pyramid Head on a big screen, no matter what.
Mary died before the story begins, and the town is built out of James’s grief and guilt; the people he meets are pieces of her. In the last scene James is back on the day they first met, and this time he drives her away from Silent Hill.
James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine) is a painter who once crossed paths with Mary (Hannah Emily Anderson) just as she was leaving Silent Hill. He cost her the bus, offered a lift instead, and the two fell for each other and settled in the town. Years later they've split, James has moved away, and he's in rough shape, even with a therapist (Nicola Alexis) in his corner. Then a letter from Mary shows up asking him to come back. He goes. The town is buried in fog and drifting ash, nearly empty, and something in there notices him. Christophe Gans directs. One hundred six minutes, visibility zero.
Anyone holding a letter they can't explain. Bring a flashlight.
