The best character in Rogue One is a reprogrammed security droid who says whatever he’s thinking, and that tells you how thin the humans are. Felicity Jones has a great face for a hero and almost no lines that reveal who Jyn is. Diego Luna does more with one guilty look than the script does with whole scenes. The early stretch hops from planet to planet like it’s late for a connecting flight, and one digitally rebuilt face from the old movies looks like a wax figure learning to talk. Then the story lands on a tropical beach planet and finally becomes a real war film, with Donnie Yen strolling through a firefight on faith alone. Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO gets every laugh. It made $1.06 billion worldwide, and it earned that money in the final stretch. A 7.4 because the last act is that good and the first half is homework. $3,632 says you put on A New Hope right after and it suddenly feels like a sequel.
What works: A gritty, desperate final battle, Donnie Yen’s Chirrut and Alan Tudyk’s deadpan droid.
What doesn’t: The first half is choppy and rushed, and Jyn and most of the crew never get enough character to match the stakes.
Who it’s for: Star Wars fans who want the war part of Star Wars, and anyone about to rewatch A New Hope.
The team steals the Death Star plans and transmits them to the Rebel fleet, and every member of Rogue One dies on Scarif, with Jyn and Cassian together on the beach as the Death Star fires. Darth Vader cuts through a hallway of Rebel troops, but the plans make it to Princess Leia, leading straight into A New Hope.
Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) was just a kid when the Empire took her father, scientist Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), to help Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) build a secret weapon. Years later the Rebel Alliance breaks her out of an Imperial labor camp with a proposition: help them reach Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), the rebel extremist who raised her, because he may know where her dad is. She teams up with intelligence officer Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his blunt reprogrammed droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). Gareth Edwards directs. One hundred thirty-four minutes, the mission that sets up the whole saga.
Anyone who believes in long shots. Bring a blaster and a lot of hope.
