For a big chunk of Roofman, the hero lives in secret behind the bike shelves of a Toys "R" Us, eating candy and watching the staff, and it’s a true story. Derek Cianfrance goes sweet and shaggy here, and the looseness costs him. At 126 minutes it wanders, and the McDonald’s robberies through the roof fly by so the toy store can take over. Channing Tatum holds it together. He plays Jeffrey Manchester as polite, clever and lonely, an Army vet who misses his kids so badly that he slides into another family’s life under a fake name. Kirsten Dunst plays Leigh, a single mom at the store who sees something good in him. Peter Dinklage plays Mitch, a manager so stingy he won’t give toys to a church toy drive. Critics gave it 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 7.1 because Tatum turns a sad, strange story into something sweet without letting Jeffrey off the hook. $342.98 says you walk past the bike aisle the next time you’re in a toy store and take a long look behind it.
What works: Channing Tatum is warm and believable as a polite, lonely man making terrible choices, and the toy store hideout gives the story a sweet, strange heart.
What doesn’t: At 126 minutes it meanders, and the roof robberies that gave Jeffrey his nickname get rushed to make room for the romance.
Who it’s for: People who like true crime stories with more heart than suspense, and anyone who’s ever wanted to stay in a store after closing.
Desperate for money for a new identity, Jeffrey robs the Toys "R" Us, and Leigh recognizes him. He turns back to spend Christmas with Leigh and her girls instead of leaving town, and police are waiting at her door; years are added to his sentence, Leigh later visits and forgives him, and the credits show the real people.
In 1998 North Carolina, Army veteran Jeffrey Manchester (Channing Tatum) is a divorced dad of three who can't make the money work. His old 82nd Airborne buddy Steve (LaKeith Stanfield) points out that Jeffrey is great at spotting patterns, and Jeffrey turns that skill into robbing McDonald's restaurants through the roof, very politely. It doesn't last. After prison and an escape, he ends up hiding inside a Toys "R" Us, where he falls for Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a single mom who works there under a harsh manager, Mitch (Peter Dinklage). Derek Cianfrance directs this true story. One hundred twenty-six minutes, open after hours.
Anyone who knows a toy store after closing time. Please use the front door.
