How Runner Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Hank Malone ends up with an exotic parrot after a botched job early in Runner, and that bird turns out to be the calmest passenger in the whole movie. Everything after is pure overdrive. Hank, an ex-soldier turned delivery man for hire who doesn’t care what’s in the box, gets paired with medical courier Ben Bishop and a cooler holding a liver for a sick girl named Ellie. The organ matches a blood type so rare that a cartel wants it too, so the rest is car chases and fistfights across Brisbane. The story is nonsense, and the sad backstory it bolts onto Hank feels like it belongs to a heavier movie. But Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson have easy, funny chemistry as a mismatched pair, and Scott Waugh keeps the action loose and loud. Critics gave it 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 5.9 because it’s dumb fun with a good heart. $18.92 says you buy a bag of gas station ice this summer and drive it home like a life depends on it.

What works: Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson have easy, funny chemistry, and the chases are fast and gleefully over the top.

What doesn’t: The plot is flimsy and the tragic backstory sits awkwardly next to all the goofy action, so the tone never quite settles.

Who it’s for: Action comedy fans who want a buddy movie with a big heart and don’t mind leaving logic at the door.

Spoilers

Ben is shot while escaping the cartel and dies before they reach the hospital, and the inside threat turns out to be Ellie’s nurse Julie. Hank wins a final brawl with Damian Zaldívar in the hospital, Ellie’s surgery works, and Hank later takes a trip to Paris to honor his late daughter.

About me:

Hank Malone (Alan Ritchson) is an ex-Army Special Forces operative in Brisbane who works as a runner, moving packages for clients, legal or not. Fresh off a job that somehow left him with an exotic parrot, he picks up a new delivery at the airport, along with medical courier Ben Bishop (Owen Wilson), who insists they head straight to the hospital. The package is a liver for a sick girl named Ellie, and it matches a blood type so rare that a cartel run by Damian Zaldívar (Rodrigo Santoro) wants it too. Scott Waugh directs. Ninety-eight minutes, keep it on ice.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who drives like they are late for something. Mind the cooler.
