Scream used to be the smartest kid in the horror class, and Scream 7 shows up having skipped the reading. There’s no new trend to tear apart, no sharp joke about the genre, just a phone call, a mask and a lot of running. Worse, you often can’t see it. Whole scenes are lit like somebody forgot to pay the electric bill, and the editing stutters so badly that chases lose track of who is where. The hook is a good one. Sidney Prescott has a quiet life in Indiana, a police chief husband, a coffeehouse and a teenage daughter named after her late best friend, and then Ghostface video-calls wearing a face from Woodsboro she never expected to see again. Gale and the Meeks-Martin twins come back to help, and Neve Campbell carries herself like a woman who has done this before. It made $208 million worldwide on a reported $45M. A 3.0 because the legacy cast deserves a sharper script. $68.91 says your coffee order this week comes with one long, suspicious look at the barista.
What works: Sidney’s new life and the video-call hook make for a strong setup, and the legacy characters are still nice to see.
What doesn’t: The script has nothing new to say about horror, and the murky lighting and choppy editing make the chases hard to follow.
Who it’s for: Die-hard Scream fans who need to see every chapter, no matter what.
The Stu on the video calls is a deepfake built by Marco, a supervisor at the institution, working with Sidney’s neighbor Jessica, who wants to turn Tatum into the next Sidney. Sidney and Tatum take them both down together.
Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) finally got out. She lives in quiet Pine Grove, Indiana, as Sidney Evans, married to police chief Mark Evans (Joel McHale), running a coffeehouse and raising her kids, including teenage daughter Tatum (Isabel May). Then the phone rings. It is a video call from Ghostface, and the voice on the line says Tatum is next. Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and her crew, Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding), are in the mix too. Kevin Williamson, who wrote the 1996 original, directs. One hundred fourteen minutes, do not answer unknown numbers.
Anyone who knows the rules. Phone on silent, doors locked.
