Linda Liddle once sent in an audition tape for Survivor, and a smug coworker plays it on the company flight to laugh at her, right before the plane goes down. Send Help is Sam Raimi having the time of his life with a mean little office revenge story on a deserted island, and the only real knock is that it stacks twist on twist until the last act runs short of breath. Rachel McAdams is phenomenal. Her Linda goes from the mousy strategist nobody thanks to the most capable person on the beach, building shelter and catching fish while her new CEO lies there hurt and still giving orders. Dylan O’Brien is perfectly sniveling as Bradley, a boss who takes too long to realize who’s in charge now. Danny Elfman’s cheeky score and some gleefully gross effects keep the tone darkly funny. It made $94 million worldwide on a reported $40M. A 7.6 because McAdams is a menace in the best way. $1,659 says you think of Linda the next time a boss calls the office one big family.
What works: Rachel McAdams is brilliant as a pushover who turns out to be the most dangerous person on the island, and Raimi’s playful style fits perfectly.
What doesn’t: The script piles on one twist too many, and the final act loses some of the snap that makes the first hour so fun.
Who it’s for: Anyone who has ever done the work while somebody else took the credit.
Linda has secretly known about a luxury beach house across the island almost from the start. The final showdown leaves her the only one to make it home, and a year later she’s a celebrity promoting her memoir and promising a self-help book.
Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams) is the overlooked strategist who does everyone's homework and gets none of the credit. When Bradley Preston (Dylan O'Brien) takes over as CEO, the promotion she was promised goes to someone else. Then he brings her along on a business trip to Bangkok anyway. A storm takes the plane down, and Linda and Bradley wash up on a remote island, him badly hurt and helpless, her suddenly the most qualified person on the beach. Out here, the org chart flips. Sam Raimi directs. One hundred thirteen minutes, no Wi-Fi.
Anyone whose boss never learned their name. Linda can start a fire with two sticks.
