Jane Austen wrote Edward Ferrars as one of the most passive love interests in English literature, and no remake has managed to fix him. That problem comes baked in. Everything around him is the reason to go. Georgia Oakley’s version puts the Dashwood sisters ahead of the courtship, which is the right call, because Elinor holding it all in while Marianne feels everything out loud is the real love story here. Daisy Edgar-Jones has the harder job, playing a woman whose whole personality is not reacting. Willoughby now makes his entrance at the beach, scooping up Marianne after she hurts her ankle in the sea, which is very romantic and also a little bit lifeguard. It has to live next door to the Ang Lee version with Emma Thompson, and that’s a tough neighbor. Critics landed at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences liked it more. A 7.0 because it’s a warm, handsome take on a story most people already know. $4.94 says you text your sister something nice tonight and she asks what you broke.
What works: Putting the sisters’ bond at the center gives an old story a fresh angle, and the cast runs deep, from Caitríona Balfe to Fiona Shaw.
What doesn’t: Edward Ferrars is still a damp sponge of a love interest, and anyone who knows the book or the earlier movies will see every turn coming.
Who it’s for: Austen fans who rewatch period dramas every winter, and sisters who need something new to argue about.
Lucy Steele drops Edward once his family cuts him off and marries his brother Robert instead, which frees Edward to finally propose to Elinor. Marianne pulls through a serious illness and starts something slower and kinder with Colonel Brandon, who also faces Willoughby in a duel where nobody gets hurt.
Jane Austen again, and that's not a complaint. When their father dies, the Dashwood sisters, careful Elinor (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and all-heart Marianne (Esmé Creed-Miles), lose the house to their half-brother and his awful wife and start over in a Devonshire cottage. Caitríona Balfe plays their mother. Georgia Oakley directs. One hundred and thirty-one minutes of manners and heartbreak.
Anyone who has an opinion about the 1995 version. Everybody does.
