Two of the world’s deadliest parents blow their cover by stopping a bank robbery on camera. That’s the whole engine of Shadow Force, and it runs out of gas fast. Kerry Washington and Omar Sy play Kyrah and Issac, the former leaders of a covert team, now raising their son Ky in hiding from their old boss, Jack Cinder. Mark Strong plays Cinder as a man who has never let a grudge go in his life. Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Method Man show up as Auntie and Unc and give the movie its only real jolt of fun. The fights are where this should shine, and too many are so dim and choppy you can barely follow who is winning. The Colombian locations look great, at least. Critics gave it 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $5.42 million worldwide on a reported $40 million budget. A 3.4 because a family on the run deserved sharper action. $59.88 says you’d pay full price tomorrow for an Auntie and Unc spinoff.
What works: Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Method Man bring real personality, and the locations in Colombia give the movie a lived-in look.
What doesn’t: The action is murky and choppy, and the script runs on twists you can see coming from the first act.
Who it’s for: Kerry Washington and Omar Sy fans who want a no-thinking-required action night and don’t mind squinting.
Spoilers
Unc turns out to be the one feeding the family’s location to Cinder, and two of Cinder’s closest aides are secretly government investigators. Kyrah and Issac take Cinder down together on his island, and six months later they’re living openly with a second baby on the way.
Kyrah Owens (Kerry Washington) and Issac Sarr (Omar Sy) used to lead Shadow Force, an international covert team run by their boss Jack Cinder (Mark Strong). Then they fell in love, had a son, Ky (Jahleel Kamara), and disappeared to raise him in peace. Cinder never let it go. Years later, Issac stops a bank robbery to protect Ky, the footage goes public, and Cinder sends the rest of Shadow Force after the family. Time to call in Auntie (Da'Vine Joy Randolph) and Unc (Method Man). Joe Carnahan directs. One hundred four minutes, zero quiet family dinners.
Retired spies with a kid and a go-bag. Keep your face off the news.
