Retired assassin, remote hideout, a kid who needs protecting: Shelter is a Jason Statham movie built entirely from spare Jason Statham parts. Michael Mason lives alone on a windswept island in the Outer Hebrides until a storm forces him to pull a teenage girl named Jessie out of the sea, and soon a government surveillance system with a cute acronym puts a target on both of them. Every plot turn is one you’ve seen coming since the trailer. The surprise is how well it’s put together. Ric Roman Waugh keeps it tight, the island is moody and cold, and the booby traps Mason sets for the first team that comes calling are a genuine treat. Bill Nighy and Naomi Ackie play the MI6 bosses circling him. It made $56.2 million worldwide on a reported $50M. A 5.6 because it’s familiar from top to bottom and sturdy all the way through. $8.69 says you finish it and quietly decide which friend you’d trust to row your groceries out to an island every week.
What works: It’s lean, well made and moody, with a fun booby trap sequence and a sweet bond between Mason and Jessie.
What doesn’t: The plot recycles almost every beat from earlier Statham movies, so there’s never any real doubt about how it will play out.
Who it’s for: Statham fans who want the usual protector story done cleanly, with some gloomy Scottish scenery on the side.
Manafort, the old handler, turns out to be the one hunting Mason, and Mason gets Jessie onto a boat to a new life in Spain before settling things with Manafort. Months later, a chess piece from Mason turns up at Jessie’s cafe table in Ronda, and he watches her from the street before walking away.
Michael Mason (Jason Statham) used to be an assassin for a secret MI6 unit called Black Kite. Now he lives alone on a remote island in Scotland's Outer Hebrides, and the only people he sees are teenager Jessie (Bodhi Rae Breathnach) and her uncle, his old Royal Marines buddy, who bring supplies every week. Then a storm wrecks a supply run, and Mason has to pull Jessie out of the sea. Soon a surveillance program called THEA spots his face on camera, and acting MI6 chief Roberta Frost (Naomi Ackie) sends a team. Bill Nighy plays his old handler. Ric Roman Waugh directs. One hundred seven minutes, no visitors.
Anyone dreaming of a quiet life on an island. Statham can tell you how that goes.
