Shooter cares deeply about wind speed, bullet drop and humidity, and not at all about whether its plot holds together. Bob Lee Swagger is the best sniper alive, a man who calculates everything, and he still walks straight into a setup you could spot from the parking lot. The bad guys then explain their evil in long, smug speeches, so there’s no mystery left by the end. Mark Wahlberg plays Swagger as a quiet, stubborn guy who talks to his dog more than to people, and that part works. Michael Peña is the best thing in it, a rookie FBI agent who keeps noticing the details his bosses would rather ignore. Antoine Fuqua shoots the action cleanly, especially a snowy mountain showdown that crackles. Critics gave it 47% while IMDb users gave it a 7.2, a split that makes total sense. A 5.7 because the craft is tight and the story is paint-by-numbers. $5,432 says you lick your thumb and hold it up to check the wind before your next free throw.
What works: Michael Peña’s sharp rookie agent and Antoine Fuqua’s clean, tense action scenes keep it watchable.
What doesn’t: The conspiracy is obvious from the first act, and the villains explain everything in speeches instead of letting it unfold.
Who it’s for: Action fans who love sniper details and don’t need the plot to make much sense.
Swagger proves the rifle used in the frame-up couldn’t have fired, which clears his name, but the men behind the plot walk free on a technicality. So he tracks them to a snowy cabin and settles it himself, then drives off with Sarah.
Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) was a Marine scout sniper until a mission went wrong and his own side left him behind. Now he lives alone in the mountains, far from everybody. Colonel Isaac Johnson (Danny Glover) shows up anyway with a request: there may be a plot against the President, and he needs the best marksman alive to figure out how a pro would pull it off. Swagger reluctantly helps. Then the plan flips, he takes the blame, and a rookie FBI agent, Nick Memphis (Michael Peña), starts to suspect the story doesn't add up. Antoine Fuqua directs. One hundred twenty-four minutes, measured in wind speed.
Anyone who can calculate wind speed in their head. Patience required.
