Sight wears its heart so far out on its sleeve that subtlety never gets a seat. It’s the true story of Dr. Ming Wang, a Chinese immigrant who became a renowned eye surgeon in the United States, and it’s adapted from his own 2016 memoir, From Darkness to Sight. Terry Chen plays Wang, and Greg Kinnear plays his fellow surgeon, Dr. Misha Bartnovsky. Andrew Hyatt directs it as a faith-based film with a warm, humanist streak, and critics mostly agreed it’s moving even when it’s short on nuance. Every emotional beat lands in the same earnest key. Audiences didn’t mind one bit: CinemaScore gave it an A, and it made $7.2 million domestically on a reported $8.5M. A 6.0 because the story is genuinely inspiring and the telling rarely changes gears. $7.19 says you read a road sign out loud on the drive home, just to prove you still can.
What works: The real story is remarkable, and the film tells it with sincere conviction and a warm, humanist streak that audiences clearly loved.
What doesn’t: It plays nearly every scene in the same earnest key, so there’s little tonal nuance and not many surprises along the way.
Who it’s for: Families looking for an uplifting, faith-friendly true story about someone who built a life around helping others.
There’s no twist to spoil. It’s drawn from Wang’s own memoir, so it lands where his real story does, with a surgeon devoted to helping people see.
This one is a true story. Dr. Ming Wang (Terry Chen) came to the United States from China and became a famous eye surgeon, working in Nashville, Tennessee, alongside his fellow surgeon and partner Dr. Misha Bartnovsky (Greg Kinnear). The film also goes back to Ming as a boy, with Jayden Zhang and Ben Wang playing him at younger ages. Fionnula Flanagan plays Sister Marie, and Mia SwamiNathan plays Kajal. Director Andrew Hyatt adapts the story from From Darkness to Sight, the 2016 memoir Wang wrote himself. It is about faith, family and a life spent helping people see. One hundred one minutes, keep the tissues close.
Anyone who needed someone to believe in them. Also, anyone overdue for an eye exam.
