How Signs Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Signs gets more fear out of a crackling baby monitor than out of its actual alien, and that’s the problem. Once you get a good look at it, the dread leaks out like air from a beach ball. The ending also leans on an alien weakness so goofy it became a punchline, and the movie sells it as proof of a higher plan. Before that, M. Night Shyamalan does a ton with almost nothing: a dog that won’t stop barking, a birthday party clip on the news, kids folding tinfoil hats, a family eating what might be their last dinner. Mel Gibson plays a grieving ex-priest with his jaw locked tight. Joaquin Phoenix hiding in a closet to watch the news is the most relatable thing in the movie. It made $408.2 million worldwide, yet its movie.guru score is the 5.5 median. A 6.2 because the first hour is a masterclass in creepy and the last stretch trips over its own big idea. $4,592 says you watch the birthday party clip twice and still jump the second time.

What works: Patient, creepy craft built from tiny things, plus a funny, frightened Joaquin Phoenix who gives the family scenes real warmth.

What doesn’t: Once the alien is fully on screen the fear drains away, and the ending’s big explanation is too silly to carry the faith message the movie hangs on it.

Who it’s for: People who like slow-burn creepiness and family drama with their alien invasions, and who can forgive a wobbly finale.

Spoilers

The aliens turn out to be harmed by water, so Bo’s half-finished glasses scattered around the house become weapons, and Morgan’s asthma keeps him from breathing in the alien’s poison. Colleen’s last words about telling Merrill to swing away suddenly make sense, and by the final scene Graham is wearing his collar again.

Signs's Blurbs
About me:

Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) used to be a priest. After a family tragedy he walked away from his faith and stuck to farming in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, raising his son Morgan (Rory Culkin) and daughter Bo (Abigail Breslin) with help from his younger brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix), a former minor league slugger. Then a giant crop circle shows up in their cornfield overnight. Then more start appearing all over the world. The dogs are acting strange, the old baby monitor is picking up chatter, and the TV news keeps getting weirder. M. Night Shyamalan directs. One hundred six minutes, one cornfield you will never trust again.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who owns a tinfoil hat and keeps it near the door. Merrill has extras.
