Ryan Coogler crammed a blues musical, a family drama and a vampire siege into one movie, and you can see the seams. Sinners spends its first half as a patient Delta drama about twin brothers opening a juke joint, and it’s so rich that when the horror kicks in, you almost miss the quieter movie it was. A few great characters also get less time than they deserve. Michael B. Jordan gives Smoke and Stack different walks, different eyes and different moods, so you always know who’s who. Miles Caton’s Sammie plays one song that pulls the whole room through time, and it’s one of the best scenes of the decade. Jack O’Connell makes Remmick charming in the worst way. Wunmi Mosaku gives the movie its soul. It made $280 million domestic, which is wild for an original R-rated period piece. A 9.0 because it’s a horror movie with real history and real music in its bones. $911 says the next time someone knocks on your door after dark, you pause a little too long before letting them in.
What works: Michael B. Jordan’s two distinct performances, the time-bending music scene, and a first half that builds a whole community before the horror hits.
What doesn’t: The shift into horror is abrupt, a few characters get cut short before they get room to breathe, and the ending runs past its natural stopping point.
Who it’s for: Horror fans who want real story with their scares, and music lovers who’ll go home looking up Delta blues.
Remmick is a vampire who wants Sammie’s music for its power, and by dawn most of the juke joint crowd has been turned or lost, including Stack. Smoke takes on a group of Klansmen the next morning before dying of his wounds, and decades later an older Sammie meets the still-young Stack and Mary in his blues club.
Mississippi Delta, 1932. Twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) come home to Clarksdale after years in Chicago with a pile of cash and one big plan: buy an old sawmill and turn it into a juke joint where Black workers in town can dance. Their young cousin Sammie (Miles Caton), a preacher's kid with a serious guitar, headlines, next to blues veteran Delta Slim (Delroy Lindo). Smoke's estranged wife Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) runs the kitchen. Opening night is packed, until a stranger named Remmick (Jack O'Connell) shows up asking to come in. Ryan Coogler directs. One hundred thirty-seven minutes, the blues bites back.
Anyone who can play guitar until sunrise. Do not invite strangers in.
