Aatami Korpi hauls his entire house across a border on the back of a truck, log by log, and that’s the most reasonable thing he does all movie. It’s 1946, Finland has given Karelia up to the Soviet Union, and Jorma Tommila’s former commando goes back to the home where his family lived before the war took them, and takes it apart to rebuild somewhere it can’t be taken again. The Soviets release a prisoner, Draganov (Stephen Lang), to stop him. What follows is 89 minutes of chases by motorcycle, plane, tank and train, built on old-school stunt work and set pieces that keep topping each other. The story is thin and the physics quit early. But Jalmari Helander knows exactly what he’s making, and the grief under all that stubbornness keeps it from being pure noise. Critics gave it 93%. A 7.3 because it’s ridiculous on purpose and great at it. $92.91 says you finally fix that one loose cabinet door at home this weekend and feel quietly proud of it.
What works: The set pieces are inventive and the stunt work is punchy and old-school, with every chase trying to top the last one.
What doesn’t: The story is thin as a plank, and the physics give up long before the finale does.
Who it’s for: Grown-up action fans who loved the first Sisu and want the same stubborn hero in a bigger, sillier sandbox.
Draganov reveals he was the man responsible for the deaths of Aatami’s family, and their final showdown on a speeding train ends with Draganov gone for good. Aatami carries his house back across the border, where a group of Finnish men offer to help him rebuild.
It is 1946, World War II is over, and Finland has handed the Karelia region to the Soviet Union. Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila), the former commando known as the man who refuses to die, crosses into Karelia to the house where his family lived before they were lost in the war. He takes it apart board by board, stacks it on a truck and heads off to put it back together somewhere safer, in their honor. The Soviets find out, and the KGB frees a prisoner named Draganov (Stephen Lang) to go after him. Jalmari Helander directs. Eighty-nine minutes of pure stubbornness.
Anyone who thinks moving house is stressful. Try it with the KGB on your tail.
