Nobody in Snatch can understand a word Brad Pitt says, and Guy Ritchie decided that was the best idea in the movie. He was right. Pitt’s bare-knuckle boxer Mickey mumbles through every scene while everyone around him just nods, and it’s the funniest running gag of 2000. The plot, a stolen diamond bouncing between thieves, gangsters and one very unlucky dog, is basically Lock, Stock again with more money and a couple of Americans. There are barely any women in it. It’s all smirking men, and after 104 minutes the smirking wears thin. But Jason Statham’s deadpan narration, Vinnie Jones as Bullet Tooth Tony and Alan Ford’s Brick Top, who is terrifying in the calmest voice imaginable, make it endlessly rewatchable. Critics shrugged, while 988,300 IMDb ratings sit at an 8.2. A 7.8 because the dialogue is a blast even when the story is a pinball machine. $23.46 says you ask someone for directions this week, nod at every word and understand none of it.
What works: Rapid-fire dialogue, Statham’s dry narration, and a lineup of oddballs led by Brad Pitt’s mumbling boxer.
What doesn’t: The story is a near copy of Ritchie’s Lock, Stock formula, and the wall-to-wall tough-guy smirking wears thin with almost no women in sight.
Who it’s for: Fans of British crime comedies who love a twisty plot and quotable lines more than deep characters.
Mickey refuses to take the fall in the fixed fight because he bet everything on himself, and his people turn the tables on Brick Top. The stolen diamond spends the ending inside the dog that Turkish and Tommy adopted.
A thief named Franky Four-Fingers (Benicio del Toro) steals a huge diamond in Antwerp and is supposed to get it to New York jeweler Cousin Avi (Dennis Farina), with a quick stop in London first. Bad idea. Meanwhile, small-time boxing promoters Turkish (Jason Statham) and Tommy (Stephen Graham) have a fight lined up for a dangerous gangster named Brick Top (Alan Ford), until their boxer gets flattened by Mickey O'Neil (Brad Pitt), an Irish Traveller and bare-knuckle champ nobody can understand. Boris the Blade (Rade Šerbedžija) and Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones) join the mess. Guy Ritchie directs. One hundred two minutes, zero straight answers.
