$365.7 million, reportedly, and one of the things that budget buys is a scene explaining where Han got his last name. Nobody asked. Solo is a connect-the-dots movie: the dice, the Kessel Run, the first meeting with Chewie, each one stamped like a passport. Alden Ehrenreich is likable and smart enough not to do a Harrison Ford impression, but the script keeps nudging you to compare them anyway. The whole thing is shot so dim you’ll want to check your TV’s brightness. Then Donald Glover walks in as Lando with a closet full of capes and total confidence, and the movie wakes up. The train heist on a snowy mountain is a legit great set piece, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s droid L3-37 has more opinions than the rest of the crew combined. It made $392.9 million worldwide, which is not a fun number next to that budget. A 5.7 because there’s a fun heist buried under a museum tour of trivia. $4,284 says you ask someone where their last name comes from this week and get a better story than Han’s.
What works: Donald Glover’s smooth Lando, the snowy train heist and L3-37’s droid-rights energy give the movie some real spark.
What doesn’t: It spends too much time explaining trivia nobody needed explained, and the murky, underlit look makes half the scenes hard to see.
Who it’s for: Star Wars fans who enjoy a scrappy heist and don’t mind a prequel answering questions they never asked.
Beckett betrays the crew and Han shoots him before he can finish his sentence. Qi’ra takes out the crime boss and secretly reports to a surprise Darth Maul, and Han wins the Falcon from Lando in a card game.
Long before the Falcon, Han (Alden Ehrenreich) is a teenage street hustler on the shipyard planet Corellia, planning a getaway with Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke). Only one of them makes it out. Han swears he will come back for her, signs up with the Imperial Navy, and ends up a muddy foot soldier on a battlefield planet. There he falls in with a crew of thieves run by Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) and makes a very large new friend named Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo). Before long they all owe a dangerous crime lord a big favor. Ron Howard directs. One hundred thirty-five minutes, flying in under twelve parsecs.
Anyone who can win a ship in a card game. Cape optional, swagger required.
