Solo Mio is a postcard with a plot stapled to the back. Kevin James plays Matt, an American schoolteacher left at the altar in Italy with nothing but a note, who takes the nonrefundable honeymoon by himself because what else is he going to do. Rome looks gorgeous, the countryside looks even better, and the story goes about where you’d guess, with every bump sanded down before it can sting. The supporting couples get a line of personality each, including a pair who keep divorcing and remarrying each other, which honestly deserves its own movie. Still, James is sweet here. He plays heartbreak quiet instead of goofy, and it works. Nicole Grimaudo brings real warmth as Gia, the café owner who rescues his wallet from a pack of preteens, and Andrea Bocelli turning up as her uncle is a lovely, silly surprise. It made $26.4 million worldwide on a reported $4M. A 5.8 because it’s kind and pretty and never takes a real risk. $3.27 says you start pricing flights to Rome before the credits finish rolling.
What works: Kevin James plays heartbreak with gentle sincerity, and the Rome and Tuscany locations are gorgeous.
What doesn’t: The story is predictable and smooth to a fault, and the two married couples are sketched too thinly to matter.
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants a clean, sweet rom-com about starting over, especially guys who usually skip rom-coms.
Heather turns up at Matt’s hotel and reveals she met Gia before the wedding, and Gia helped her write the note. Matt makes peace with it, sells the ring to buy a motorcycle and asks Gia to an Ed Sheeran concert, and a mid-credits scene shows the two of them getting married in Italy.
Matt Taylor (Kevin James) is an American schoolteacher who plans the perfect proposal and the perfect wedding in Italy. Then his fiancée, Heather (Julie Ann Emery), leaves him at the altar with nothing but a note. Nothing is refundable, so Matt takes the honeymoon anyway, solo, in Rome. On the same package he meets two married couples, Julian (Kim Coates) and Meghan (Alyson Hannigan), plus Neil (Jonathan Roumie) and Donna (Julee Cerda), and a café owner named Gia (Nicole Grimaudo). Chuck and Dan Kinnane direct, and Andrea Bocelli turns up too. Ninety-six minutes, table for one.
Anyone with a nonrefundable trip and a bruised heart. Rome has room.
