What’s the polite way to tell a stranger you spent the day watching her at work because she looks exactly like your late best friend? Someone Like You never finds one, and it plays that zoo stakeout as romantic. Architect Dawson Gage, played by Jake Allyn, and London Quinn have been best friends since a school zoo trip a decade back, and her family took him in when he was orphaned. Then comes a sudden loss, and a family secret: London was an IVF baby, and somewhere out there is a twin. Dawson tracks her down: Andi, played by Sarah Fisher in both roles, who works at the Nashville Zoo and loves to sing. From there it’s an earnest, faith-friendly romance with a lake, a jet ski, a big family secret and an ending you’ll call by the halfway mark. It made $5.94 million domestically. A 4.5 because the heart is in the right place and the plot isn’t. $52.82 says you corner your mom this week and ask if there’s anything about your birth she forgot to mention.
What works: It’s sincere and gentle, and its feelings about chosen family, grief and second chances are clearly genuine.
What doesn’t: The premise gets odd fast, especially the day Dawson spends watching Andi at work, and the ending is visible from a mile away.
Who it’s for: Fans of Karen Kingsbury’s novels and gentle faith-based romances who want a clean, heartfelt story more than surprises.
Andi donates a kidney to Louise, London’s mother, and heads home to her own family in Nashville. Later, Dawson shows up at the zoo to say his firm is opening a Nashville office, and the two finally admit they love each other.
Dawson Gage (Jake Allyn) is an architect near Nashville, and for about ten years his best friend has been London Quinn (Sarah Fisher). He would happily be more than friends. She keeps it strictly platonic. London's family took Dawson in after he lost his parents at nineteen, so the Quinns are basically his family too. When tragedy hits, her parents share a secret: London was conceived through IVF, and she has a twin sister out there somewhere. Dawson decides to find her. Tyler Russell directs, adapting the Karen Kingsbury novel. One hundred twenty-six minutes, and you will want to call your best friend.
Anyone who has held onto a best friend for ten years. Tell them today.
