Keanu Reeves voices a grieving black hedgehog, and he plays it more seriously than half the actors in prestige dramas. That’s the strange magic of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Shadow gets sprung from a G.U.N. prison after decades in deep freeze, still furious over losing his friend Maria, and Sonic, Tails and Knuckles can’t lay a glove on him in Tokyo. Then Jim Carrey shows up twice: as Ivo Robotnik and as Gerald, Ivo’s bitter grandfather. Two Carreys is a lot, and some critics said one too many, while the scenes with Tom and Maddie still drag. But the pace never lets up, the effects look better than ever, and the Sonic and Shadow rivalry has real feeling behind it. It holds an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore. A 7.3 because Keanu turns a cartoon rival into the heart of the movie. $88.69 says you catch yourself rooting for the moody hedgehog over the blue one and refuse to admit it to your kids.
What works: Keanu Reeves makes Shadow genuinely moving, and Jim Carrey’s double act is a deranged good time when it’s working.
What doesn’t: Two Jim Carreys can be exhausting, and the human side characters keep pulling focus from the hedgehogs everyone came for.
Who it’s for: Kids who live on the games and the parents who grew up playing them, especially anyone who’s been waiting for Shadow.
Gerald’s real plan is to fire the Eclipse Cannon at Earth itself to avenge Maria, so Ivo turns on him and Tails and Knuckles knock Gerald into the reactor. Ivo stays behind with Shadow to push the failing cannon away, but a post-credits scene reveals Shadow survived, and Amy Rose shows up to rescue Sonic from an army of Metal Sonics.
Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba) are living the good life in Green Hills, Montana, with Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). Then somebody breaks Shadow (Keanu Reeves) out of a top-secret G.U.N. prison, where he's been kept on ice for fifty years, and he comes out with a serious grudge. Director Rockwell (Krysten Ritter) sends the team to Tokyo to bring him in. Shadow is faster, stronger and way moodier, and the job falls apart quick. Meanwhile Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is still out there. Jeff Fowler directs. One hundred ten minutes, two very fast hedgehogs.
Anyone who can keep up. You can't, but it's cute that you'd try.
