Sorry, Baby (2025)

Patience helps with Sorry, Baby: the timeline hops around so much that the early stretch feels like a puzzle with pieces missing on purpose. Eva Victor writes, directs and stars as Agnes, who lives in a small Maine college town and is putting her life back together after something terrible happened. Naomi Ackie plays Lydie, her best friend, and their easy, rambling rapport is the real thing most friendship movies only fake. There’s a stray kitten named Olga, a neighbor played by Lucas Hedges, and a sandwich shop owner, John Carroll Lynch, who shows up with exactly the right kindness at exactly the right moment. Victor finds dry, wry laughs in a heavy story without ever making light of it. Reviews came in at 97%, all for a movie that cost a reported $1.5 million. A few side characters come and go too fast, and the jumps between years can blur. An 8.6 because it’s gentle, funny and honest about healing. $587.37 says you text your best friend the second it ends.

What works: Eva Victor’s writing finds real humor without ever making light of Agnes’s pain, and Naomi Ackie makes Lydie the friend you’d call in the middle of the night.

What doesn’t: The time jumps can leave you a step behind, and some side characters vanish before you really get to know them.
