How Spa Weekend Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Leslie Mann, Isla Fisher, Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau walk into a luxury spa, and the punchline never shows up. That’s four people who could make a grocery list funny, stuck with a script that piles on mishaps and hopes volume counts as comedy. The premise is fine. Four childhood best friends have drifted apart, and Coco books a birthday getaway for Jane at the Solaris Resort. They leave Mel off the list because she’s a walking disaster, then Sophie caves and invites her anyway. Fisher goes full chaos as Mel, getting Sophie fired by yelling at her boss, getting Coco’s ex-husband to show up at the resort and wrecking a stolen golf cart, and she’s easily the most fun thing in it. Erika Heynatz is a good sport as the resort manager running out of patience. It made $13.9 million worldwide on a reported $20M. A 3.4 because the cast is terrific and the material isn’t. $31.22 says you text your oldest group chat about planning a trip tonight, and nobody answers until Thursday.

What works: Isla Fisher throws herself into Mel’s chaos, and the four leads have the easy rapport of friends who would be a blast on a real trip.

What doesn’t: The script stacks mishap on mishap without ever building real jokes, so a terrific cast spends 97 minutes working for scraps.

Who it’s for: Grown-up friend groups planning their own getaway who just want something light playing in the background.

Spoilers

After Mel takes the blame for the group’s trouble at the resort, the others learn she’s broke and lonely and go back to stand up for her. Sophie lands a job with the resort chain, Jane ends up with Kai the yoga instructor, and the four close out the movie heading to Monte Carlo together.

Spa Weekend's Blurbs
About me:

Jane (Leslie Mann), Sophie (Anna Faris), Coco (Michelle Buteau) and Mel (Isla Fisher) were best friends as kids, then adult life happened and they drifted. For Jane's birthday, Coco books a weekend at the fancy Solaris Resort and quietly leaves Mel off the invite, since Mel is reckless and trouble follows her everywhere. Sophie feels guilty and invites Mel anyway, at the very last minute. So much for relaxing. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore write and direct. Ninety-seven minutes, cucumber slices optional.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone with a group chat that has one friend everybody is scared to invite.
