$2.51 billion worldwide for a movie about a guy nobody remembers. That’s the joke, and the actual pitch is even better: Peter Parker saving a city that cheers for Spider-Man and has no idea who Peter is, while his two best friends look straight through him. Then you read the cast list and the worry shows up. The Punisher. Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. That’s a lot of company for a story about being alone, and at 145 minutes there’s room for all of them, maybe too much room. Critics stopped at a 66 on Metacritic while the audience score beat 93% of movies, so this one is built for fans first. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is the casting that makes the most sense on paper, a guy who handles problems the exact opposite way Peter does. A 7.4 because lonely Spider-Man is the best idea Marvel has pitched in years, and a crowd of guest stars keeps elbowing into it. $491 says you text an old friend tonight just to prove somebody still remembers you.
What works: The lonely, forgotten Peter Parker setup is the strongest pitch the Holland movies have had, and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is a smart foil.
What doesn’t: A story about being alone keeps getting crowded by guest stars, and 145 minutes is a long time to spend on one lonely guy.
Who it’s for: Fans who have followed Holland’s Peter since Homecoming and want to see what happens after the whole world forgot him.
Four years after the world forgot Peter Parker existed, Spider-Man (Tom Holland) is New York's hero and nobody's friend. MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) have no idea who he is. Then the Punisher (Jon Bernthal) shows up, and so does Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. Destin Daniel Cretton directs. One hundred and forty-five minutes, one very lonely web-slinger.
Anyone who still remembers Peter Parker. You're the only one.
