How Spider-Man: Homecoming Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Homecoming is a John Hughes movie where the kid in detention can stick to the ceiling, and it’s at its best when it remembers that. The problem is the suit. Tony Stark built Peter a high-tech onesie with a chatty AI and a training wheels setting, so half the fun of being Spider-Man arrives in a box with a Stark logo on it. A kid from Queens should win with duct tape and guts, and the best scenes are the ones where he does. Michael Keaton fixes a lot. His Vulture is a salvage boss who got squeezed out by rich people, and he plays it so calm and so reasonable that you catch yourself nodding along. Tom Holland is the first Peter who actually feels fifteen, all nerves and overconfidence, and Jacob Batalon’s Ned is the best sidekick in the franchise. A 7.8 because it’s charming and funny but always a little too supervised. $568 says you call yourself the guy in the chair the next time you help a friend move.

What works: Michael Keaton’s grounded, reasonable Vulture and a Tom Holland performance that finally makes Peter feel like an actual teenager.

What doesn’t: The Stark tech suit and constant Iron Man babysitting make Peter feel less self-made than any Spider-Man should.

Who it’s for: Fans of high school comedies who want a superhero movie with homework, crushes and a curfew.

Spoilers

Adrian Toomes turns out to be the father of Liz, Peter’s homecoming date, which makes the car ride to the dance one of the tensest scenes in the MCU. Peter saves Toomes from a burning wreck, turns down an Avengers spot, and Aunt May walks in on him in the suit in the final shot.

Spider-Man: Homecoming's Blurbs
About me:

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is fifteen, back in Queens after helping the Avengers in Germany, and desperate to get called up again. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) gave him a slick new suit and a babysitter, Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), who never texts back. So Peter splits his days between school and his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon), and his nights between bike thieves and lost tourists. Then he stumbles onto Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton), a salvage boss selling weapons built from leftover alien tech. Jon Watts directs. One hundred thirty-three minutes, one very supervised superhero.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone with a homecoming date and a backpack full of web fluid. Text back, Happy.
