How Splitsville Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Quick note before anyone forwards this to a spouse: Splitsville is a comedy about two marriages falling apart, and almost nobody in it is easy to root for. It starts with Carey and Ashley coming upon a crash, and before the shock fades, Ashley asks for a divorce. Carey goes looking for sympathy from his best pal Paul and Paul’s wife Julie at their beach house, and learns their marriage runs on some very unconventional rules. Then a stranger accuses their son Russ of stealing his jet ski, Julie settles it with a piece of pottery, and the weekend goes off a cliff. Michael Angelo Covino directs and co-wrote it with Kyle Marvin, and the two throw themselves into an all-out brawl that’s the slapstick peak. Dakota Johnson is a lot of fun as Julie. Critics, at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, warmed to it faster than audiences. A 6.3 because the slapstick is sharp and the people are hard to like. $25.09 says you hear a jet ski this summer and instinctively look around for someone to blame.

What works: The farce is tightly built, the slapstick lands hard, and the ensemble shares the laughs evenly, with Dakota Johnson a standout.

What doesn’t: Almost everyone on screen is selfish or petty, so the jokes have to work overtime because you never really root for anybody.

Who it’s for: Grown-ups who like their comedies awkward and their friendships tested to the breaking point.

Spoilers

Nothing gets neatly fixed. By the end Carey is raising a baby with Ashley, Paul and Julie have split but can’t quite let go of each other, and the beach house is now a rental whose owner accuses Russ of stealing a jet ski all over again.

Splitsville's Blurbs
About me:

Carey (Kyle Marvin) and Ashley (Adria Arjona) witness a scary crash on the road, and right after, Ashley announces she wants a divorce. Stunned, Carey runs to his best friend Paul (Michael Angelo Covino), who shares a beach house with his wife Julie (Dakota Johnson), looking for comfort. Instead he learns their marriage runs on house rules he never knew about. Then a fight over a jet ski blows up the whole weekend. Covino directs and co-wrote it with Marvin, which is a lot of hats. One hundred four minutes, zero chill.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone whose best friend's marriage looks a little too perfect. Leave the jet ski alone.
