Two great performances, one very small movie. Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere skips the stadium years and zooms in on the stretch after the River Tour, when Bruce holed up near his New Jersey hometown and recorded a stark, quiet album by himself on a four-track. That means a lot of watching a man sit on a bed with a guitar. Critics knocked the familiar beats, and they’re right: the nervous record executive, the hometown romance and the flashbacks to a hard childhood all feel borrowed from other music movies. Jeremy Allen White plays Bruce as private, restless and wound tight. Jeremy Strong is even better as Jon Landau, the manager who goes to bat for a record the label doesn’t want. Stephen Graham plays Douglas, Bruce’s father, whose shadow is all over the new songs. It made $45.2 million worldwide on a reported $55 million budget. A 6.0 because two terrific actors are stuck in a story that barely leaves the bedroom. $41.32 says you play Nebraska front to back tonight with the lights off.
What works: Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong are both excellent, and the film respects how personal and risky that quiet album really was.
What doesn’t: The story is tiny and familiar, built from music biopic stock scenes like the worried label boss and the romance that can’t last.
Who it’s for: Springsteen fans who care more about how the songs got made than about the stadium years.
Bruce insists the raw bedroom demo become the album, and Jon fights the label to release Nebraska with no singles and no tour. Bruce hits a low point, reaches out to Jon and starts seeing a therapist, and later his proud parents visit him back on tour, where his dad finally reconnects with him.
It's 1981, and Bruce Springsteen (Jeremy Allen White) has just finished the River Tour, worn out by how big he's gotten. His manager and producer Jon Landau (Jeremy Strong) rents him a quiet house near Freehold, New Jersey, the town where he grew up. Bruce buys a Camaro, plays local clubs, starts seeing Faye (Odessa Young), and keeps circling his hard history with his dad Douglas (Stephen Graham). Then he has his guitar tech Mike Batlan (Paul Walter Hauser) turn the bedroom into a four-track studio, and the songs that come out are quiet and dark. Scott Cooper directs. One hundred nineteen minutes, one cassette, no band.
Anyone who ever recorded something alone in their room and meant every word.
