Somebody should’ve muted the grown-up narrator in Stand by Me. He keeps explaining feelings the movie already showed you, like a tour guide who won’t let you look at the painting. Ignore him. Four twelve-year-olds walk the train tracks for 89 minutes, and Rob Reiner gets more honesty out of them than most coming-of-age movies get out of a whole cast of adults. River Phoenix plays Chris like a kid who’s already been told who he’ll grow up to be and refuses to believe it. Corey Feldman’s Teddy is loud and wounded in the same breath. Wil Wheaton’s Gordie is the quiet one carrying a grief nobody at home will talk about. The leech scene still makes adults squirm, the train bridge is pure panic, and Kiefer Sutherland makes Ace the kind of teenage bully you’d still cross the street to avoid. An 8.8 because it nails how huge one weekend feels when you’re twelve. $968 says you try telling the pie-eating story at your next cookout and get shut down halfway.
What works: Four kid performances that feel completely real, led by River Phoenix, plus the leech scene and the train bridge.
What doesn’t: The adult narrator spells out emotions the movie already earned, and Ace’s gang plays more like cartoon villains than real teens.
Who it’s for: Anyone who had a best-friend crew at twelve, and anyone who wants a coming-of-age movie that skips the sugar.
The boys find the body, and Gordie holds Chris’s gun on Ace to stop the older gang from taking it; they report it with an anonymous phone call instead of taking the fame. The narrator reveals the friends drifted apart, and that Chris became a lawyer and died years later trying to break up a fight.
Labor Day weekend, 1959, in tiny Castle Rock, Oregon. Twelve-year-old Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton) and his best friends Chris Chambers (River Phoenix), Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) and Vern Tessio (Jerry O'Connell) learn that a missing boy from a nearby town is lying somewhere out by the railroad tracks, and they figure finding him will make them famous. So they tell their parents they are camping out, grab some supplies and start walking the rails, keeping clear of the local teen bully Ace Merrill (Kiefer Sutherland). Rob Reiner directs, from a Stephen King story. Eighty-nine minutes, four friends, one long walk.
Anyone who still talks to the friends they had at twelve. Pack snacks, it is a long walk.
