Fair warning, this is the movie that turns friendly Star Wars fans into courtroom lawyers. Critics gave it a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb users settled on a 6.8, and both sides are still yelling. Here’s the call. The casino planet detour is a slog, a whole side quest about space racehorses that eats a chunk of the 152 minutes, and the main plot is basically the slowest chase ever filmed. But Rian Johnson actually takes swings. Mark Hamill plays Luke as a grumpy hermit who has given up on his own legend, and it’s the best he has ever been in the role. The red salt planet looks unreal, the throne room fight is choreographed like a dance, and there’s one silent moment in the middle of a space battle that made entire theaters gasp. Adam Driver keeps getting better. A 6.9 because the swings are thrilling and the misses are long. $50.55 says you bring this movie up at a family dinner and lose the whole evening to the argument.
What works: Mark Hamill’s bitter, broken Luke, the throne room fight and some of the most striking images in the whole saga.
What doesn’t: The casino planet side quest drags hard, and a slow-motion chase makes the main plot feel stuck in place for most of its runtime.
Who it’s for: Fans who want Star Wars to take risks, and anyone who enjoys a good argument afterward.
Kylo kills Snoke and takes over the First Order, and he tells Rey her parents were nobodies. Vice Admiral Holdo rams a cruiser through the enemy fleet at lightspeed, and Luke faces Kylo on Crait as a Force projection from across the galaxy, then fades away peacefully.
Right after The Force Awakens, Rey (Daisy Ridley) has tracked down Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on a remote ocean island, and he does not want to be found. She wants a Jedi teacher. He wants to be alone with his green milk. Meanwhile General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) and pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) have the Resistance on the run, because the First Order can now track them through hyperspace, and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is still angry about everything. Finn (John Boyega) teams up with a mechanic named Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) on a long-shot plan. Rian Johnson directs. One hundred fifty-two minutes, a lot of porgs.
Anyone looking for a Jedi master. Check the island, he's not picking up.
