Jabba the Hutt’s son is a pit fighter who doesn’t want to be rescued, and that’s about as big as the stakes get in The Mandalorian and Grogu. The movie plays like three episodes of the show glued end to end: an arena brawl, a raid on a crime boss, a palace showdown with the Hutt Twins. Nobody changes much. Jeremy Allen White voices Rotta the Hutt with all the energy of a Monday morning, and Mando spends nearly the whole thing under the helmet, so Pedro Pascal’s face barely makes it into his own movie. Grogu is still the franchise’s secret weapon, and every scene where he toddles into trouble works. The arena fight, with Janu flooding the pit with monsters, is a lot of fun, and the music swells like it’s scoring a much bigger film. It runs 132 minutes. A 5.3 because the duo is still charming and the story is TV filler on a giant screen. $928.31 says you check the price of a Grogu plush before you even reach your car.
What works: Grogu is as lovable as ever, the arena fight is a blast, and the score gives the action real lift.
What doesn’t: The episodic story never builds to anything that matters, and Rotta the Hutt’s flat voice performance drains the energy from his scenes.
Who it’s for: Fans of the show who want more Mando and Grogu adventures, no matter how small the stakes.
Janu and Commander Coin turn out to be the same person, and the Hutt Twins capture Mando, who nearly dies from a Dragonsnake’s venom before Grogu stays behind and saves him. The Twins end up in their own Dragonsnake pit, Rotta joins the New Republic, and Mando teaches Grogu to fly the Razor Crest.
The Empire is gone, but its leftover warlords are not, so the New Republic has Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his foundling Grogu hunting them down. The next target is a warlord called Commander Coin. The only lead comes from the Hutt Twins, who will trade intel for one favor: rescue Jabba's son, Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White), from a gladiator pit on the moon Shakari. Small problem, Rotta does not want to be rescued. Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) of the New Republic's Adelphi Rangers is in the picture too. Jon Favreau directs. One hundred thirty-two minutes, this is the way.
